Newswise — Birds have an enormously long evolutionary history: the earliest of them, the famed Archaeopteryx, lived 150 million years ago in what is now southern Germany. However, whether these early birds were capable of flying and, if so, how well has remained shrouded in scientific controversy.
In new research published on October 8th in Scientific Reports, University of Bristol PhD student, Guillermo Navalón, together with a team of Spanish palaeontologists and Dr Luis M. Chiappe of the Natural History Museum, Los Angeles County, studied the exceptionally well-preserved right wing of a 125-million-year-old bird from central Spain.
