Newswise — If the first month at NYU Langone’s new Center for Musculoskeletal Care (CMC) is any indication of the growing need for integrated care, the more than 16,000 patients coming to the facility on 38th Street in Manhattan since it opened in April is a true testament. The CMC now offers, under one roof, the full spectrum of orthopaedic, rheumatologic and physical therapy services for treating patients with arthritis and conditions affecting the bone, joint and muscle.

One of those patients is Jim Lynch, a partner at Manhattan law firm Lynch, Daskal, Emery LLP, who suffered from a lingering shoulder injury. His clients often need him to be available at a moment’s notice, so taking a full day to see an orthopaedist, travel to another location for an x-ray and then elsewhere for rehabilitation just wasn’t going to work. He found his way to Wayne Stokes, MD, clinical associate professor, Rusk Rehabilitation at NYU Langone Medical Center and director of sports medicine rehabilitation at the CMC. Mr. Lynch was not only examined and treated by Dr. Stokes in the new facility, but radiology was upstairs – and if needed, the 7,200 square-foot physical therapy gym was just steps away.

“There is a great atmosphere when you walk into the CMC – it just feels professional, clean and efficient, and having all the services I need in one location is very convenient,” said Lynch. “The staff is attentive and caring, and not just about my health – but about the value of my time. I checked in using the new palm scanning device, was examined by Dr. Stokes, escorted to radiology for an x-ray – and was back in my office within an hour.”

The 110,000-square-foot CMC is the first, and largest, stand-alone musculoskeletal facility in the U.S. It combines state-of-the-art therapeutic and medical technology with the expertise of NYU Langone’s top-ranked doctors, wellness programs, biomedical research of bone and joint conditions and high-end performance analysis – at a single point of care. NYU Langone is one of the nation’s premier academic medical centers and ranked among the top 10 in the country for the musculoskeletal specialties of orthopedics, rheumatology, and rehabilitation in the 2011 U.S. News & World Report’s annual survey of “Best Hospitals” in America.
