Being a good supervisor is important, but keep your own boss, and his boss, happy if you want to climb the career ladder, says management expert Robert Holmes, Ph.D., dean of the UAB School of Business. Start by accepting that you must adapt to your boss's management style, "because he or she won't change." Clarify expectations and set performance goals for yourself and your team. Establish confidence in your ability by delivering what you promise. Be aware of how your work reflects on your supervisor. "Bosses don't like surprises that lead to embarrassment. Make sure your boss looks effective, and be careful about criticizing your boss's decisions. Don't ever underestimate his capabilities, power and influence."
