Some executives believe that promoting from within is the best way to retain good employees and keep up morale. But, this policy isn't always good for the company, says UAB management professor Barbara Wech, Ph.D. "To keep the business moving forward, sometimes new blood needs to be brought in from the outside to bring fresh ideas to the table. Company leaders can't wait years for a recent graduate to learn the skills necessary to lead the organization." Employees shouldn't discount the learning opportunities that come with change, Wech says. "Take the opportunity to learn from someone new. The skills learned can give employees bargaining leverage with their current or future employer."
