Newswise — A new edition of “AACN Scope and Standards for Acute and Critical Nursing Practice” is now available from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) in downloadable PDF and print versions.

“AACN Scope and Standards for Acute and Critical Care Nursing Practice” describes and measures the expected level of practice and professional performance for acute and critical care registered nurses and articulates how acute and critical care nursing contributes to a patient- and family-centered healthcare system.

First issued in 2008, the document incorporates advances in scientific knowledge, clinical practice, technology and other changes in the dynamic healthcare environment. “Nurses’ work environments are impacted by an ever-changing healthcare landscape, including healthcare reform and the Affordable Care Act, the national emphasis on the provision of safe and quality care, and pay-for-performance incentives,” said Linda Bell, RN, MSN, AACN clinical practice specialist. “Scope and Standards is a must-have document that reflects nurses’ evolving role and the ongoing need to remain flexible in response to the increasingly complex needs of our patients.”

For the 2015 edition, an expert work group collaborated to update the content. A valuable resource for all nurses practicing in an acute or critical care setting, the up-to-date guide offers a practical tool for students, faculty, nurses in practice, members of the interprofessional team and other nursing colleagues.

“AACN Scope and Standards for Acute and Critical Nursing Practice” can be downloaded in PDF format for free on AACN’s website. A print version of the 31-page booklet can be purchased for $10 for AACN members and $25 for nonmembers from AACN’s online bookstore.

AACN also publishes Scope and Standards guidelines for acute care nurse practitioners and for acute care clinical nurse specialists.
