Newswise — The American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) recently endorsed the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) guideline update on intraoperative monitoring (IOM).
The update concludes that IOM with somatosensory evoked potentials and transcranial electrical motor evoked potentials is an effective technique to predict increased risks of serious complications from spinal surgeries and some chest surgeries.
AANEM Director of Health Policy Catherine French said, “Evidence-based guidlines help ensure the best outcomes of medical treatment. The AAN guideline on IOM will not only be of value to our members, but also be beneficial to payers as they review existing reimbursement policies and create such policies for this service in the future.”
The guideline was published February 21, 2012, simultaneously in the Neurology® journal, the AAN’s medical journal, and in the Journal of Clinical Neurophysiology the medical journal of the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society.
