Newswise — Reston, VA — Mythreyi Bhargavan Chatfield, PhD, has been named the new American College of Radiology executive vice president for quality and safety, effective Dec. 18. She succeeds Pamela A. Wilcox, RN, MBA, who will retire from the position after serving the College for 28 years.

“Mythreyi Chatfield brings a strong understanding of the changing dynamics associated with providing medical care and the new paradigm physicians are facing as health care delivery focuses on quality outcomes and value for the patient. She is committed to taking a proactive approach on the key issues affecting radiology,” said ACR Chief Executive Officer William T. Thorwarth Jr., MD, FACR.

Thorwarth added that, “For many years, Pam Wilcox shared her commitment to supporting radiology in its pursuit of quality, safe patient care, and in developing numerous preeminent ACR quality and safety programs. While she will be missed, the College will continue to improve its quality and safety efforts, a tradition that she helped start.”

As the senior director for data registries, Chatfield has managed national registries focused on improving practice quality in radiology and performed research on topics related to quality improvement. An ACR staff member since 2001, she also served as director of research, conducting research on socioeconomic topics of relevance to radiology, including monitoring trends in imaging utilization and costs, small-area variations in health care use, and racial and ethnic disparities in access to care.

Wilcox joined the ACR department of standards and accreditation in 1987, with the launch of the voluntary Mammography Accreditation Program. She has provided professional support and oversight for the development and implementation of nine additional accreditation programs (ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, nuclear medicine, positron emission technology, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound, breast MRI and radiation oncology). Over the years, the renamed quality and safety department grew from a staff of 4 to 78, reflecting its increased responsibilities. Wilcox oversaw all ACR quality initiatives, including Appropriateness Criteria®, ACR BI-RADS® Atlas, the other RADS systems, RADPEER™ (a peer-review program for radiologists) and the National Radiology Data Registry, the Commission on Breast Imaging, and all quality management activities, including metrics and pay-for-performance.
