Newswise — New Brunswick, NJ -- Alfred F. Tallia, MD, MPH, professor and chair, Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, has been elected to a four-year term as a Member-at-Large of the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME).

The NBME is an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides high-quality examinations for health professions. The NBME develops the three-step United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), which provides a common evaluation system for applicants seeking initial licensure to practice medicine in the United States. Results of USMLE are reported to individual licensing authorities in the United States and its territories for use in granting the initial license to practice medicine.

Dr. Tallia has been associated with NBME since 1996 and has served in a number of roles. He chaired the USMLE Step 3 Community-based Care Committee, the Post Licensure Assessment System Governing Committee, and the Committee to Evaluate the USLME Program, and served on the USMLE Budget Committee.

Dr. Tallia earned his bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from Fordham University in New York, and his medical degree from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He completed his residency and fellowship in family medicine at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He also earned his master’s degree in public health through a joint program at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.

Dr. Tallia is a board certified family physician whose practice-based research focuses on the organization and quality of the healthcare system. He was selected as a member of the UMDNJ Master Educator’s Guild for demonstrating exceptional teaching, creativity, and innovation in the delivery of education. Dr. Tallia is the editor and primary author of a popular medical review textbook and multiple abstracts, book chapters and publications.
