Newswise — John A. Wilson, MD, FAANS, will serve as the 2016-2017 treasurer of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), the organization announced during the 84th AANS Annual Scientific Meeting, held in Chicago, April 30-May 4, 2016. He will join President Frederick A. Boop, MD, FAANS; Vice President Timothy B. Mapstone, MD, FAANS; President-Elect Alex B. Valadka, MD, FAANS; Secretary Christopher I. Shaffrey, MD, FAANS; and Immediate Past President H. Hunt Batjer, MD, FAANS, to complete the 2016-2017 AANS Executive Committee.

Wilson began neurosurgical practice in Pittsburgh at Allegheny General Hospital. In 1993, he was recruited to the neurosurgical faculty at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston Salem, N.C. Since then, he has practiced neurosurgery at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center where he is the David L. and Sally Kelly Professor and vice chair in the Department of Neurological Surgery as well as the co-director of the Neuroscience Service Line. His practice focuses primarily on cerebrovascular and skull base disorders.

“It is an honor to have been elected by my peers to serve the AANS membership as its treasurer. I am looking forward to working with the dedicated and hard-working volunteer physician leadership of the AANS as well as our terrific staff and executive leadership. I will strive to be a good steward of the resources of the organization and to continue the strong precedent of fiscal responsibility set by those serving before me,” commented Wilson. Wilson has served as an advisor to the North Carolina state Medicare Carrier Advisory Committee and the national Medicare Coverage Advisory Committee. Wilson has served as an officer in a numerous national and regional societies including: president of the North Carolina Neurosurgical Society, president of the Southern Neurosurgical Society, president of the Society of University Neurosurgeons (SUN), chair of the joint AANS and Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) Cerebrovascular Section and chair of the AANS/CNS Washington Committee.
