Newswise — WASHINGTON, D.C., July 15, 2016 -- Over 1,000 physics teachers and students will converge on Sacramento, California on July 16-20, at the Sacramento Convention Center where attendees will participate in an agenda that goes beyond presentations. Planned sessions will not exclusively address more traditional topics such as Best Practices in Educational Technology, Art and Science of Teaching, and Effective Practices in Educational Technology, but will also include sessions on Addressing Race and Ethnicity, Climate Change, and Leveraging Strengths of Diverse Populations.

The American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) meeting includes not only plenary and topical sessions and presentations, but also a High School Physics Camp and a High School Physics Teachers’ Day. The camp provides an opportunity for high school physics teachers to discuss topics such as inquiry labs, standards-based grading, video analysis, and computer–based labs, with registrants deciding which topics will be covered. The physics teacher day is designed specifically for teachers who have never before attended an AAPT Conference to familiarize them with all the tools and resources that are available to teachers through AAPT.

In addition to the primary program that includes a wide variety of talks and topics there is a program of workshops that will be held at California State University that focus on topics including Impacts of Materials on Society, Electrostatics Tutorial, Making Physics Videos Using Tablets, Ben Franklin as my Lab Partner and Tools for Teaching Students to Synthesize Concepts. There is also Demo Show that will be a celebration of Physics and PASCO showcasing many of the demonstrations and effects seen in both "That Physics Show" and the Weather Channel's show, "Strangest Weather on Earth" performed by some of the best physics demonstrators of the Physics Instructional Resource Association (PIRA) group.

The Physics Education Research (PER) Conference will be held at the end of the AAPT summer meeting at the Sheraton Grand Sacramento to allow the PER community to engage in debate and discussion about research methodology and its role in how research studies are best approached.

A full program of activities and presentations including descriptions can be found on the AAPT Summer Conference website at http://www.aapt.org/Conferences/sm2016/.
