American Pain Society Awarded Research Grant from Mayday Fund

Newswise — CHICAGO, May 31, 2016 – The American Pain Society, www.americanpainsopciety.org, announced today it will be awarded a two-year research grant of $100,000 from the Mayday Fund to support the organization’s Future Leaders in Pain Research Grant Program. The money will fund two $25,000 grants in 2016 and 2017 for basic science research.

Established by APS in 2005, the Future Leaders in Pain Research Grant Program has funded 44 researchers, and the recipients have completed more than 500 scientific publications and have been principal investigators for 47 National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants totaling $34.6 million.

The APS grants are awarded for pain research projects of doctoral-prepared investigators who have not yet attained NIH RO1 level funding. The program is designed to encourage young scientists to pursue pain research and eventually develop pilot data for securing obtaining additional major grant funding for continued pain research.

“We are grateful to the Mayday Fund for its generous support of young pain researchers and also for leading the way in activating a major recommendation of the federal government’s National Pain Strategy, which is to increase funding for pain research,” said APS President David Williams, Ph.D.
