Newswise — WASHINGTON – Barry S. Anton, PhD, distinguished professor emeritus at the University of Puget Sound and a clinical practitioner in Tacoma, Wash., has been elected 2015 president of the American Psychological Association. He will serve as APA’s president-elect in 2014.
An APA fellow, Anton is board certified in clinical child and adolescent psychology. He is founder and managing partner at Rainier Behavioral Health, a multi-disciplinary mental health practice in Tacoma.
A focus of his presidential activity will be to convene an international summit on psychology and integrated care. "This summit will explore the role psychologists can play as health care becomes more integrated as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act unfolds in 2014," Anton said. "Psychological science can greatly inform public policy to reduce health disparities, integrate mental health into primary care and destigmatize mental illness."
Anton has 15 years of APA governance and leadership experience, including serving on the Council of Representatives, three terms on the APA Board of Directors and on the APA Boards of Professional Affairs and Educational Affairs. Anton has served on eight APA task forces, including as chair of the Task Force on Sexual Orientation and Military Service and the Task Force on Psychology’s Agenda for Children and Adolescent Mental Health. He also served on Washington state’s then-Gov. Christine Gregoire’s task force on bullying and youth violence.
He serves as an oral examiner for the American Board of Professional Psychology and is treasurer of the American Board of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology board of directors. Anton received his PhD from Colorado State University and completed his clinical internship at Harvard Medical School. He completed his post-doctoral fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital and Judge Baker Children's Center.
