Newswise — CHICAGO – The American Society of Anesthesiologists® (ASA®) and the U.S. Pain Foundation will co-host a Twitter chat to discuss pain management options during National Pain Awareness Month on Thursday, September 24, at 1 p.m. ET. Using the hashtag #Pain101, the chat will address what people should know about chronic and acute pain, new relief options, the role opioids and other prescription drugs play, comprehensive treatment plans and the importance of pain medicine specialists.

“Pain is one of the most challenging things to treat because its source can be elusive,” said Richard Rosenquist, M.D., chair of the ASA Committee on Pain Medicine. “That’s why it’s vital to see a physician specializing in pain medicine who can help identify the source of the pain and suggest which pain method might work best, including the more recent technical advances.”

What: #Pain101 Twitter Chat

When: Thursday, September 24, at 1 p.m. ET

Who: Hosted by @ASALifeline and @US_Pain. Chat leaders include ASA members Anita Gupta, D.O., Pharm.D. and Robert Bolash, M.D., U.S. Pain Foundation President Paul Gileno and patient Chris Power.

How to Participate: To register for the Twitter chat, visit http://bit.ly/1L2qfPd. Submit your questions and comments on Twitter using the hashtag #Pain101.

Why: Chronic pain affects more than 100 million American adults, according to the Institute of Medicine. Pain treatment is complex and can cause more harm than good if not provided by a pain medicine specialist such as a physician anesthesiologist. ASA and the U.S. Pain Foundation will answer your questions and explain the latest high-tech methods for relieving pain. Patients should participate in managing their pain and work with their physician anesthesiologist to create a comprehensive pain management plan.
