Newswise — The American Society of Anesthesiologists, the foremost advocate for all patients who require anesthesia or relief from pain has appointed John A. Thorner, JD, CAE as Executive Vice President of the ASA Park Ridge, Illinois Executive office.

Thorner joins ASA with 26 years of association and public affairs experience, most recently serving as Executive Director of the National Recreation and Park Association of Ashburn, Virginia and Washington, DC. Previously, he served as Executive Director of the Optical Society of America in Washington, DC from 1998-2002 and as Executive Director of the Air and Waste Management Association in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from 1994 to 1998.

In addition to his association management experience, Thorner worked as a journalist early in his career, writing for The Washington Post, Associated Press, The Atlanta Constitution and Legal Times. He also served as a lawyer, working as a legal counsel for the National Labor Relations Board during the Carter Administration, as an environmental counsel for the American Paper Institute and National Forest Products Association, and as General Counsel for the Water Environment Federation.

Thorner received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1977, where he served on the law review. He received his Master's degree in journalism from Columbia University in 1974 and a Bachelor's degree in history and political science from Duke University in 1973, where he served as managing editor of The Duke Chronicle.

He has been a board member for the American Institute of Physics and the American Association of Engineering Societies. He currently serves as a board member for the American Society of Association Executives. He is a certified association executive, and is licensed to practice law in Georgia, Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia.

Thorner will join the ASA Park Ridge office on January 7, 2008.
