David Mannino, M.D., a leading expert in the treatment of chronic pulmonary obstructive disease (COPD), is available to discuss issues surrounding the disease, including its prevalence, diagnosis, management, novel and established therapeutic approaches, and future implications of the disease and its spread.
Dr. Mannino is a member of the American Thoracic Society’s Clinical Problems Committee, editorial board member of the society's American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (AJRCCM), and contributing author to the ATS book, Breathing in America.
“COPD affects more than 24 million people in the U.S. and more than 65 million people worldwide, and it's a disease that's expected to grow substantially over the next few years,” says Dr. Mannino. “In fact, the World Health Organization expects COPD to become the third-leading cause of death worldwide by 2020.
“COPD can have a significant impact on patients' health and quality of life, and the prevalence and severity of the disease are affected by several evolving factors,” he adds. “As a result, research needs to keep pace to ensure timely development of new treatments that can help improve patients' health and their overall quality-of-life.”
Dr. Mannino is professor and chair of the University of Kentucky's Department of Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health and a professor of medicine in the university's Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine. He also serves as director of the Pulmonary Epidemiology Research Laboratory and the director of the Southeast Center for Agricultural Health and Injury Prevention.
He also maintains active memberships and adviserships in several professional organizations, including the COPD Foundation, the USCOPD Coalition, the National Lung Health Education Program, and the Alpha-1 Foundation. As an author, Dr. Mannino has had more than 220 articles published in peer-reviewed journals, covering topics ranging from the epidemiology of lung disease to the health effects of air pollution. In addition to his position as an editorial board member of the AJRCCM, Dr. Mannino also serves as an associate editor of the Journal of the COPD Foundation and is on the editorial boards of Thorax, Chest, and the IJCOPD. During his career, Dr. Mannino has been the recipient of multiple awards, including the American College of Chest Physicians' Soffer Research Award, the American Lung Association's Advocate of the Year award, and several awards from the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS). He's also served as a consultant or committee member for several major national and international health organizations, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and the European Respiratory Society (ERS). Dr. Mannino received his B.S. from The Pennsylvania State University and his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Philadelphia's Lankenau Hospital and his fellowship in pulmonary medicine at West Virginia University School of Medicine/ National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
