Newswise — Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, a former health policy advisor in the Obama and Clinton administrations, will talk about health care reform and the future of cancer care in America during the 2013 AACI/CCAF Annual Meeting, September 29 – October 1, in Washington, DC. He will deliver his remarks at 12:45 PM Sunday, September 29, at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel.
The three-day meeting convenes AACI cancer center directors and executive-level administrators with leaders of national cancer research and advocacy groups, industry, and government health agencies to develop solutions to common challenges and to share best practices. This year’s meeting program includes panel discussions on precision oncology, the costs of cancer care, drug development, clinical research management, and federal and state support for cancer research.
“AACI is honored to host Dr. Emanuel at its annual meeting,” said AACI Executive Director Barbara Duffy Stewart, MPH. “Directors, researchers and administrators from AACI cancer centers will benefit greatly from his expertise on health care reform and his guidance on ways to improve cancer care in the United States.”
Dr. Emanuel is the Vice Provost for Global Initiatives, the Diane v.S. Levy and Robert M. Levy University Professor, and Chair of the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the University of Pennsylvania. He served as the founding chair of the Department of Bioethics at The Clinical Center of the National Institute of Health AND was a special advisor for health policy to the director of the White House Office of Management and Budget from January 2009 to January 2011 where he helped craft the Affordable Care Act. He also served on former President Bill Clinton’s Task Force on National Health Care Reform.
Dr. Emanuel, a breast oncologist, is an Op-Ed contributor to The New York Times, and a book author and editor. He has received many awards, including the AMA-Burroughs Wellcome Leadership Award, the Public Service Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the John Mendelsohn Award from the MD Anderson Cancer Center. He also has been a visiting professor at New York University Law School, the medical schools of Stanford, Johns Hopkins, UCLA, and the University of Pittsburgh.
