Newswise — Chicago (Nov. 4, 2013): The Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON) has awarded Ruth Anne Herring, RN MSN CPNP CPHON®, with the 2013 Patient/Family Educational Materials Award. Herring received her award at the 37th Annual APHON Conference and Exhibit, held September 19-21 in Louisville, KY. The APHON Excellence in Patient/Family Education Materials recognizes APHON members who develop outstanding educational materials to assist patients and families in understanding the disease they face.

Herring, Patient-Family Education Coordinator for the Hematology-Oncology Service at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, TX, was nominated for this award by her colleagues for providing compassionate care and education to patients, families and fellow nurses. She has been an active member of APHON for 30 years, during which she authored two APHON publications, Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis: A Handbook for Families (2009) and Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis: A Handbook for Families (2012).

“Ruth Anne is an extremely intelligent individual and excels at her ability to share her knowledge with others. She demonstrates this on an individual level by teaching patients and colleagues; on a local level by teaching chemotherapy/biotherapy courses and hematology/oncology topics; and on a national level through her various presentations at national conferences,” says Cheryl Rodgers, PhD RN CPNP CPON®, in her nomination of Herring for the award.

APHON is the professional organization for pediatric hematology/oncology nurses and other pediatric hematology/oncology healthcare professionals. Its members are dedicated to promoting optimal nursing care for children, adolescents and young adults with cancer and blood disorders, and their families. APHON provides the leadership and expertise to pediatric hematology/oncology nurses by defining and promoting the highest standards of practice and care to the pediatric, adolescent and young adult communities.
