Newswise — ASA leadership and staff welcomed B. Diane Gambill, Ph.D. to ASA as the Society’s new Chief Learning Officer today. Gambill comes to ASA from an Executive Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer position at Physician’s Education Resource (PER), a company specializing in oncology-specific continuing medical education. Prior to her work in the private sector, Gambill was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Southern Methodist University and a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Biomolecular Chemistry at University of Wisconsin Medical School. She has a Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Georgia.

“We are delighted that Diane Gambill has joined ASA, and we look forward to her leading the Society’s educational efforts,” said John Thorner, J.D., CAE, ASA Executive Vice President. “Diane Gambill will serve as a strong leader for ASA and ensure that anesthesiologists recognize ASA as their premier anesthesia education provider.”

“As the Chief Learning Officer, my initial goals will be to work with the education staff and Society leadership to evaluate current programs and identify areas where those programs can be enhanced and/or expanded to meet the educational needs of ASA members, as outlined in the Society’s Strategic Plan,” said Dr. Gambill.

Gambill notes that the field of medical education is moving increasingly toward documenting knowledge and learning gaps, designing educational activities to address those gaps and measuring the effectiveness of CME programs in improving physician performance and patient outcomes. She said she wants to achieve these goals, and, by so doing, she wants to maintain ASA’s position as the leader in anesthesia education.
