Newswise — New Brunswick, N.J., September 30, 2014 – Supporting breast cancer efforts at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey can be as simple as picking up a tasty treat at your local Panera Bread® bakery-cafe during the month of October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In continuing with its annual Pink Ribbon Bagel campaign, Panera Bread is featuring the local sale of the Pink Ribbon Bagel™ -- as a way to support the communities served by its cafes.

The Cancer Institute of New Jersey – one of the nation’s 41 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers – is one of the many breast cancer-related entities nationwide that will receive contributions from the sale of Panera’s Pink Ribbon Bagel. Shaped in the form of the iconic pink ribbon, the Pink Ribbon Bagel features cherry chips, dried cherries and cranberries, vanilla, honey, and brown sugar, and is baked fresh each morning by Panera’s bakers at each participating bakery-cafe. For every Pink Ribbon Bagel sold in the 51 participating Panera Bread locations in northern and central New Jersey and in New York City (www.panerabread.com), ten cents will support breast cancer research and patient education programs at the Cancer Institute. “Whether through prevention education or support of programs tied to cutting-edge research and therapies, the Pink Ribbon Bagel effort helps our team at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey achieve a shared goal of raising breast cancer awareness throughout our communities. We appreciate Panera Bread’s continued dedication to this cause,” notes Cancer Institute Chief Medical Officer Deborah Toppmeyer, MD, director of both the Stacy Goldstein Breast Cancer Center and the LIFE Center at the Cancer Institute, and professor of medicine at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

“Panera Bread locations in the northern and central New Jersey and New York City areas are honored to work alongside our customers to support Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey in October,” says Cori Lintner, local marketing manager. “We’re proud to offer the Pink Ribbon Bagel as a way to help raise both funds and attention for the cause during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.” The Panera Pink Ribbon Bagel was developed in 2001 as a way to support breast cancer awareness.
