Advances in laboratory testing science and technology are providing new opportunities to personalize medical decisions, resulting in better patient outcomes. Better understanding the underlying biology and unique genetics of how specific patients will respond to treatments will mean that health care professionals can avoid the “trial and error” of prescribing treatments which may only work in a small fraction of patients (for example, 43 percent of patients don’t respond to commonly prescribed drugs for diabetes).
