Newswise — Fairfax, Va., March 31, 2015—The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) seeks to recognize an individual cancer survivor in San Antonio and the surrounding area who has committed his or her time and energy to volunteering in their local community. The winner of ASTRO’s 2015 Survivor Circle Award will receive $1,000 and will be recognized at a ceremony on Tuesday, October 20, 2015, at ASTRO’s 57th Annual Scientific Meeting, the nation’s premier scientific meeting in radiation oncology, hosting more than 11,000 radiation oncology physicians and professionals, to be held October 18-21, 2015, at San Antonio’s Henry B. González Convention Center.
“Cancer survivors have a great ability to empower others by drawing from their own experiences to offer meaningful support for other patients. They serve as a valuable resource to us as we strive to continually improve cancer care,” said David C. Beyer, MD, FASTRO, president-elect of ASTRO. “The Survivor Circle Award will honor a San Antonio area resident who is dedicated to helping others in their community, and we look forward to recognizing their leadership and tenacity.”
Any cancer survivor residing within San Antonio and the surrounding area (including Austin and Houston) who received radiation therapy as part of their treatment and who is giving back to their community through volunteer efforts is eligible to enter. The winner may keep the cash prize of $1,000 or may donate the award to a support organization or charity of his or her choice. The application is online at www.rtanswers.org/scaward. Applications must be postmarked by June 5, 2015. Since 2003, ASTRO has recognized cancer survivors in the city where its Annual Scientific Meeting is held. In addition to recognizing a local individual each year, ASTRO provides grants to patient advocacy groups that help patients and their families cope with a cancer diagnosis. These organizations are featured in the Survivor Circle during ASTRO’s Annual Meeting.
