Newswise — Advances in the scientific battle against the nation's most persistent killer, cardiovascular disease, are the focus of the University of Kentucky Cardiovascular Research Day Friday, Oct. 24, at the Lexington Convention Center, 430 West Vine St., Lexington. From the research laboratory to the clinic exam room, experts in the field—Dr. Peter W. Wilson of Emory University, Dr. Arnold Strauss of the University of Cincinnati and Roberto Bolli of the University of Louisville--will present their perspective on genetic disorders, cell therapy, and unique risk factors that can serve as predictors of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Their presentations are scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.

Earlier in the day, Dr. Michael Karpf, University of Kentucky executive vice president for health affairs, and Dr. Jay Perman, dean of the UK College of Medicine, will give remarks during a luncheon. UK graduate and undergraduate students and non-doctoral research staff also will have an opportunity to highlight their cardiovascular disease research with poster presentations, which will be judged in the afternoon. Awards sponsored by the Saha Foundation will follow a reception and dinner that evening.

The event is the 10th annual event to highlight cardiovascular research at UK since Linda and Jack Gill founded the Linda and Jack Gill Heart Institute 11 years ago with a $5 million donation, one of the largest single gifts the university has received. That investment has reaped innumerable dividends with approximately $30 million in active heart research grants. The endowment facilitated recruitment of top cardiologists and researchers who have helped to further understanding, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease.
