Newswise — Bipan Chand, MD, FACS, FASMBS, FASGE, has been named director of the newly established division of GI/Minimally Invasive Surgery, director of the Bariatric Surgery program and head of Surgical Endoscopy at Loyola University Health System. Dr. Chand also will serve as associate professor of surgery at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.
Dr. Chand was recruited to Loyola from Cleveland Clinic.

Kuo, MD, MS, MBA, chair of the Department of Surgery at Loyola University Medical Center, and director of the Oncology Institute. “Dr. Chand will also be responsible for the introduction of new minimally invasive surgical techniques at Loyola’s Maywood and Melrose Park campuses."
Dr. Chand received his medical degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He completed a residency in general surgery and also an advanced laparoscopic and endoscopic fellowship at Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Chand had been on staff there since 2003 and most recently served as director of surgical endoscopy, director of advanced surgical training and associate program director of the surgical residency program at Cleveland Clinic. In addition, Dr. Chand serves on numerous leadership committees with the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and served as president of the Ohio Society of Bariatric Surgery from 2010 to 2012.
Dr. Chand is a funded investigator who led research studies at Cleveland Clinic focusing on minimally invasive techniques in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, metabolic surgery and endoluminal therapies. A medical innovator and inventor, he holds several patents on endoscopic devices in the field of obesity care and gastrointestinal surgery. Dr. Chand also is credited with developing new technology in Barrett’s ablation and alternative nutritional access devices and techniques.
He has authored and contributed to more than 70 peer-reviewed journals and publications in the field of advanced laparoscopy and endoscopy and has recently published a book on an evidence-based approach to minimally invasive surgery. U.S. News & World Report rated Dr. Chand as a top surgeon this year. His areas of interest include obesity treatments (surgical and endoluminal), gastrointestinal surgery such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Barrett's esophagus and hiatal hernia, advanced endoscopy, solid organ surgery, abdominal wall reconstruction (inguinal and abdominal wall hernias) and robotics.
