Newswise — (NEW YORK – October 30, 2014) Charles Shapiro, MD, joins Mount Sinai as the Co-Director of the Dubin Breast Center, Director of Translational Breast Cancer Research for the Mount Sinai Health System, and Director of Survivorship Programs at The Tisch Cancer Institute at Mount Sinai.
In his new role, Dr. Shapiro will initiate clinical trials for breast cancer patients, and will work with faculty and staff to create integrative programs that seek to improve the quality of life for breast cancer survivors.
“As a nationally recognized leader in breast medical oncology and research, Dr. Shapiro will help pave the way for the Mount Sinai Health System's innovation in breast cancer treatment and care,” said Elisa Port, MD, Chief of Breast Surgery and Co-Director of the Dubin Breast Center at The Tisch Cancer Institute at Mount Sinai.
Dr. Shapiro comes to Mount Sinai from Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, where he was Section Chief of Breast Cancer, Breast Research Program Leader, and Director of Breast Medical Oncology.

Greenspan, MD Professor in Clinical Cancer Therapeutics at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and Associate Director of Clinical Research, The Tisch Cancer Institute at Mount Sinai.
His research focus is the impact of adjuvant chemotherapy on bone loss in premenopausal women; profiling of triple negative breast cancers to define subsets that have better or worse prognosis; and preclinical evaluations of novel drugs. He currently serves as liaison to Investigational Drug Steering Committee of the National Cancer Institute and is also the Chairman of the American Society of Clinical Oncology's Survivorship Committee. His research has been supported by grants from the National Cancer Institute. He has published over 180 original research papers, reviews and editorials.
In joining Mount Sinai, Dr. Shapiro said, “By integrating clinical, translational and basic scientific researchers into collaborative teams, we will hasten the discovery of new knowledge to create novel approaches to treat and prevent breast cancer.” As the Director of Survivorship Programs, Dr. Shapiro will also help to build and expand the existing survival programs and resources that Mount Sinai offers breast cancer patients.
Dr. Shapiro received his medical degree at SUNY Buffalo, and completed an internship and residency at Temple University Hospital as well as a fellowship at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School.
