Samantha Borisoff, climatologist with the NOAA Northeast Regional Climate Center at Cornell University, reviews the origins and impact of the powerful snowstorm – dubbed “Nemo” by the national media – that struck the Northeast this past weekend.
Borisoff says:
“A clipper system moving across the Ohio Valley and a storm moving up the East Coast combined to wallop parts of the Northeast with heavy snow and high winds. Four first-order climate sites set their greatest two-day snowfall total, while at four other climate sites the two-day snowfall total ranked in their top five greatest.
“The largest storm total reported was 40 inches in Hamden, Conn. Snow totals from northern New Jersey to southern Maine ranged from one to three feet! Coastal regions felt hurricane-force gusts while inland locations dealt with gusts of 40-60 mph.”
