According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):(1) concussion is a brain injury and all are serious; (2) most concussions occur without loss of consciousness; and (3) "recognition and proper response to concussions when they first occur can help prevent further injury or even death” (www.cdc.gov/concussion/sports/).

Tbe CDC reports:(1) each year, U.S. emergency departments treat an estimated 135,000 sports- and recreation-related TBIs, including concussions, among children ages 5 to 18. (MMWR July 2007); (2) athletes who have ever had a concussion are at increased risk for another concussion, and (3) children and teens are more likely to get a concussion and take longer to recover than adults (www.cdc.gov/concussion/sports/).
