The event is open to those involved in youth sports, including parents, coaches, caregivers and trainers.

BACKGROUND:As a service to the community, College of Notre Dame has designed an educational session for parents, student athletes (of all ages), coaches and trainers, the free educational forum will cover how to identify and manage concussions and especially, prevent them.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):(1) concussion is a brain injury and all are serious; (2) most concussions occur without loss of consciousness; and (3) "recognition and proper response to concussions when they first occur can help prevent further injury or even deathâ (www.cdc.gov/concussion/sports/).
Tbe CDC reports:(1) each year, U.S. emergency departments treat an estimated 135,000 sports- and recreation-related TBIs, including concussions, among children ages 5 to 18. (MMWR July 2007); (2) athletes who have ever had a concussion are at increased risk for another concussion, and (3) children and teens are more likely to get a concussion and take longer to recover than adults (www.cdc.gov/concussion/sports/).
Dr. Mouratidis is an expert on traumatic brain injuries (TBI), has worked closely with the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund during the establishment of the National Intrepid Center for Excellence and with the Department of Defense on treatment for returning veterans. Panelists Dr. Bleiberg and Dr. Wolkenberg are experts with significant clinical and research experience in the area of sports concussion (as well as other areas such as learning disabilities and ADHD):
Dr. Blieberg is Senior Fellow at the National Rehabilitation Hospital where he has treated patients, developed programs, and conducted research for the past 23 years. He was the director of the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, director of psychology, co-director of the Brain Injury Program, and the president of Integrated Brain Injury Systems, Inc. Dr. Wolkenberg is a neuropsychologist with extensive experience in issues relating to aging and to acquired brain injury and is a certified ImPact consultant.
