Newswise — (New York, NY – June 13, 2014) The Continuum Cancer Centers of New York, now part of Mount Sinai Health System, has received a three-year accreditation with commendation and an Outstanding Achievement Award (OAA) from the American College of Surgeons’ (ACS) Commission on Cancer (CoC). This award is given only to a select group of facilities and recognizes excellence achieved by the Centers in providing quality care to cancer patients.

The Centers were evaluated in 34 program standards categorized within five cancer program activity areas: cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, cancer conferences, clinical services and quality improvement. The Centers achieved commendation level of compliance, the highest level of recognition, within seven standards.

"This honor underscores our commitment to providing the highest quality, coordinated care to cancer patients,” said Luis M. Isola, MD, Director of Cancer Programs at Mount Sinai Health System. “The OAA attests our ability to provide advanced cancer care through an extensive network of clinicians, hospital and ambulatory facilities distributed across the Health System.”

“Our large collaborative network of clinicians and researchers across the system strengthens our reputation as leader in cancer care,” said Dennis S. Charney, MD, Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Dean, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and President for Academic Affairs, Mount Sinai Health System.

“As we continue to grow and enhance our cancer programs across the Mount Sinai Health system network, this national recognition highlights our efforts to provide world-class cancer care in New York,” said Steven J. Burakoff, MD, Director, The Tisch Cancer Institute at Mount Sinai and Henry M. Stratton Professor of Cancer Medicine, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

The Centers deliver high-quality, comprehensive medical care with a special focus on patients’ quality of life. An emphasis is placed on a multidisciplinary approach to cancer treatment involving a wide range of medical experts in surgical oncology, radiation oncology, and medical oncology–as well as supportive specialties that are integral to cancer care. In addition to our multidisciplinary approach and comprehensive services, The Tisch Cancer Institute enhances the exceptional medical and surgical care at Mount Sinai Health System by providing access to cutting edge clinical trials for adults and children with cancer.

About the Tisch Cancer InstituteThe Tisch Cancer Institute (TCI) is a world-class translational cancer institute established in December 2007. TCI has recruited more than 30 acclaimed physicians and researchers specializing in basic research, clinical research, and population science; built outstanding programs in solid tumor oncology; enhanced existing robust programs in hematological malignancies; and advanced the study of cancer immunology and vaccine therapy. The completion of the Leon and Norma Hess Center for Science and Medicine in 2012 is enabling the recruitment of up to 20 additional cancer researchers on two full research floors, with 48,000 square feet of space dedicated to cancer research.
