Newswise — The DHS Science and Technology Directorate's Fifth Annual University Summit will be held at the Washington DC Renaissance Hotel March 30-April 1 2011. This event is DHS's flagship research meeting and is well attended by university scientists, government officials and industry.

The Summit will connect university scientists working on DHS high-priority research areas with DHS components, industry, first responders, state/local officials, lawmakers, and policymakers.

Attendance is free, but registration is required. To register, go to the Summit website at http://www.orau.gov/dhssummit/.

Approximately 1,000 attendees are anticipated. The event is open to the media.

This year's event is titled "Catastrophes and Complex Systems: Transportation." It will focus on research and development solutions that address:

*The security of complex transportation systems and their connecting infrastructure; and

*Ways in which these systems can best be leveraged in mitigating, responding, and recovering from disasters.

During the Summit, competitively selected researchers from around the world will take part in interactive panel sessions to address homeland security challenges. Researchers and directors from the DHS Centers of Excellence (COEs), DHS program managers, subject matter experts, and other attendees will participate in the panel sessions to reveal solutions to homeland security challenges and help shape future university-based homeland security R&D.

Confirmed speakers include DHS leadership, S&T leadership and world-renowned terrorism experts from outside the United States.

All three days of the Summit will feature the DHS Centers of Excellence (COE) Innovation Showcase (http://www.orau.gov/dhssummit/coe_showcase.htm), where attendees will see demonstrations of tools and technologies and be informed of current COE research projects, educational programs, training opportunities, and other available resources for first responders, prospective students, private industry, potential research partners, and anyone else interested in homeland security science and technology.
