Dr. Jason Bara, assistant professor of chemical and biological engineering at The University of Alabama, is available by email or phone to talk about the effects of potential EPA regulations announced by the Obama Administration on Monday.

Bara researches the development of processes for clean-energy generation that uses new solvents with little or no volatility for scrubbing CO2 emissions, which has resulted in two U.S. patents with others pending.

“These rules almost guarantee the continued movement away from coal to natural gas at major electric power generating stations, though it may also accelerate the deployment of post-combustion carbon capture, utilization and sequestration technologies at some coal plants where it is most logistically feasible," Bara said.

"The plan will also certainly incentivize investment in renewables, solar and wind, and our national energy picture will certainly become diversified in the next decades," Bara continued. "The underlying emphasis on overall efficiency from all energy sources will be a key contributor to reducing overall emissions while simultaneously reducing costs to consumers.”
