Newswise — Dr. Anna Spagnoli has been appointed as the Women’s Board Chair of the Department of Pediatrics. Spagnoli joined Rush in late February from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she served as professor and chief of the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology, director of the pediatric endocrinology fellowship program, and director of the Pediatric Bone Clinic. She also held appointments in the departments of biomedical engineering. Prior to her positions at the University of North Carolina, Spagnoli was on the faculty of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Tennessee.

“Spagnoli is an accomplished leader in her field of pediatric endocrinology, with a record of achievement in clinical care, research, education, and administration,” said Dr. Thomas Deutsch, dean of the Rush Medical College, and provost of Rush University.

Spagnoli’s research in regenerative medicine applied to cartilage and bone diseases in children and adults has earned her a national and international reputation. Her contributions to this field include publishing more than 100 journal articles and abstracts, and she currently holds two large NIH grants. She has given presentations about her work throughout the world. Pediatric bone disease is also her primary clinical focus.

Spagnoli has a special interest in implementing new ways to deliver high-quality sustainable care to children with chronic diseases. Recently at UNC-Chapel Hill, she has led the organization of a medical neighborhood of medical specialists, primary care physicians and community health services to provide family-patient centered and risk-based care to children with diabetes. Spagnoli received her medical education in Italy at University of Rome Tor Vergata, and completed her residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in pediatric endocrinology at the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland. She has completed leadership programs at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and most recently was a fellow in the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine program.
