Newswise — LOS ANGELES (March 12, 2013) – Barbara A. Goff, MD, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA, will begin her one-year term as the 45th President of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) and third President of the Foundation for Gynecologic Oncology at the conclusion of the Society’s 44th Annual Meeting on Women’s Cancer, March 9-12, 2013, in Los Angeles. Dr. Goff, who also is Director of the Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship Program at the University of Washington, is looking forward to heading two dynamic organizations that work seamlessly to improve care for women with gynecologic cancer and to serve the multidisciplinary team of practitioners who treat them.
“SGO and the Foundation are at the forefront of initiatives to redefine what it means to deliver high quality, cost-effective health care for women with gynecologic cancers,” said Dr. Goff.
“The Society’s recent report, ‘Creating a New Paradigm in Gynecologic Cancer Care: Policy Proposals for Delivery, Quality and Reimbursement,’ provides the roadmap to achieve that on a national level. And the Foundation’s new Outcomes Research Institute will invest in the research necessary to get there.”
Dr. Goff specializes in the surgical treatment of gynecologic malignancies, robotic surgery, and chemotherapy for gynecologic cancers, clinical trials and early detection of ovarian cancer. She is also a frequent consultant and guest of “The Dr. Oz Show.”
The author of more than 100 scientific papers, she has been recognized numerous times by Seattle magazine as one of Seattle's Best Doctors. Dr. Goff has been in practice at the University of Washington since 1993 and actively teaches in the medical school.
Her research interests include screening and early detection of gynecologic malignancies; surgical education; factors associated with optimal treatment of cancer patients; clinical trials of novel biologic agents for treatment of gynecologic cancers; and complementary and alternative medicine use in cancer treatment.
