Newswise — NEW YORK—David Blumenthal, MD, MPP, President of the Commonwealth Fund, will deliver the 166th Anniversary Discourse at The New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM) on the topic of “Birth Pangs of the ACA in Perspective.” The event will take place on Thursday, November 7, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. at NYAM (1216 Fifth Avenue at 103rd Street) and is free and open to the public with registration.
Every year NYAM hosts its Anniversary Discourse and Awards to pay special tribute to individuals with distinguished accomplishments in health policy, public health, medicine, and scientific research. This commemorative evening is part of NYAM's heritage and has become NYAM's centerpiece event each fall. The first anniversary program on November 10, 1847, was marked by an oration delivered to an audience of 2,500 people at the Broadway Tabernacle by Dr. John W. Francis. This tradition of an annual discourse on an important issue of the day has continued for 165 years.
“Dr. Blumenthal has made invaluable contributions to health policy and health systems innovation in the United States. We are honored to welcome as this year’s Anniversary Discourse speaker,” said Jo Ivey Boufford, MD, President of The New York Academy of Medicine.
Dr. Blumenthal is president of The Commonwealth Fund, a national philanthropy engaged in independent research on health and social policy issues. Dr. Blumenthal is formerly the Samuel O. Thier Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Chief Health Information and Innovation Officer at Partners Healthcare System in Boston. He is also chairman of The Commonwealth Fund Commission on a High Performance Health System. From 2009 to 2011, he served as the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, with the charge to build an interoperable, private, and secure nationwide health information system and to support the widespread, meaningful use of health IT. He succeeded in putting in place one of the largest publicly funded infrastructure investments the nation has ever made in such a short time period, in health care or any other field. He is the author of more than 250 books and scholarly publications, including most recently, Heart of Power: Health and Politics in the Oval Office.
