Newswise — Brooklyn, NY – Iuliana Shapira, MD, has joined SUNY Downstate Medical Center as chief of the Division of Hematology and Oncology, it was announced by Moro Salifu, MD, MBA, MPH, FACP, professor and chair of the Department of Medicine. In this position, Dr. Shapira will provide leadership in the clinical, academic, and administrative aspects of the program, as well as broaden the relationship with SUNY Downstate’s affiliated institutions. “Dr. Shapira brings invaluable clinical and academic experience that will be instrumental in advancing cancer care at Downstate as we continue to grow the division, implement innovations, and improve upon our partnerships with all practitioners,” said Dr. Salifu. “I am delighted that she is filling this important role at Downstate and its University Hospital of Brooklyn.” Dr. Shapira graduated from the Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, Romania, in 1990. She trained in internal medicine at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in New Jersey and completed a hematology-oncology fellowship at SUNY Downstate. She is board certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology, and Medical Oncology. Prior to joining Downstate as division chief, Dr. Shapira was associate professor of medicine at Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, where she served as director of its Center for Cancer Genetics and Cancer Control and site co-investigator for numerous studies under a Cancer Community Oncology Program (CCOP) grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Shapira has published numerous manuscripts and abstracts in the areas of translational research, clinical research in breast cancer, ovarian and gastrointestinal malignancies, microRNAs, drug development, and T-cell lymphoma in journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Breast Cancer Research and Treatment, Nature Immunology, Journal of Investigative Medicine, and others. Dr. Shapira has served as associate editor of the Journal of Molecular Medicine since 2008. Dr. Shapira is the 2016 president of the American Federation for Medical Research (AFMR) Eastern Region, councilor for AFMR's National Council, and a member of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) NIH Research Enterprise Evaluation Subcommittee. She is also a member of the Audit Committee of the Alliance in Clinical Trials for Oncology, serving as National Cancer Institute Clinical Trials Monitoring Branch (NCI-CTMB) auditor. She served as chairwoman for the Clinical Competency Committee and site program director for the Hematology-Oncology Fellowship Program of North Shore University Hospital. Dr. Shapira was the Jacobi Hospital site investigator for the Albert Einstein Minority National Cancer Institute Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) grant until March 2015. Dr. Shapira is the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, including: 2014 Castle Connolly New York Metro Area Top Doctors in Oncology; 2014 Top 10 Doctor Hematology Specialists Nominated by Vitals; and 2014 Top Doctors Oncology nominated by peers as the very best in their specialties published by Newsday.
