Holiday revelers would do well to note that most children who die in alcohol-related vehicle crashes are killed because they are not restrained.

"By far, most alcohol-related wrecks involving a child fatality are caused by the impaired driver who is transporting the child," says trauma surgeon Loring Rue, M.D. "In the majority of these cases, the drinking adult did not have the presence of mind to buckle these children up."

Citing a May 2000 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Rue notes that the more alcohol the driver consumed, the less likely the child was to be restrained. "This deadly combination puts kids at extremely high risk."
