Drought Conditions Dry Up Hope for Bright Colors

Karl Niklas, Cornell University professor of plant biology whose research focuses on the relationship between plants and the physical environment, predicts the beauty of the 2016 fall foliage season will all depend on where you are in New York state.

Niklas says:
“Our record drought will have a significant and negative affect on Autumn coloration. The intensity of the Autumn coloration will be spotty and depend on local rain fall.
“In the lower counties where rainfall was very poor, the trees will be shedding leaves early and the intensity of coloration will be poor.
“In the more northern counties, especially east of Syracuse, the coloration will be normal because rainfall was more or less normal.”
