Newswise — (New York – July 21, 2015) Seven departments at The Mount Sinai Hospital and one at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai (NYEE) ranked in the Top 25 in this year’s U.S. News & World Report “Best Hospitals” guidebook. This equals the Mount Sinai Health System’s performance in the Top 25 rankings last year.
Four of The Mount Sinai Hospital’s Top 25 departments improved their rankings from last year: Cardiology/Heart Surgery (No. 7, up from No. 10 last year), Gastroenterology/GI Surgery (No. 8, up from No. 9), Neurology/Neurosurgery (No. 14, up from No. 15), and Nephrology (No. 23, up from No. 47).
The other departments at The Mount Sinai Hospital ranked in the nation’s Top 25 were Geriatrics (No. 3), Diabetes & Endocrinology (No. 21), and Ear, Nose & Throat (No. 23). NYEE’s Ophthalmology department made the Top 25 this year, ranking No. 11.
Mount Sinai Health System departments ranked in the Top 50 were Urology at The Mount Sinai Hospital (No. 26, up from No. 27) and Ear, Nose and Throat at NYEE (No. 42, not ranked last year).
Six other departments in the Mount Sinai Health System were ranked as “High Performing,” a category that represents the top 25 percent of all hospitals surveyed. They included five departments from The Mount Sinai Hospital – Gynecology, Orthopaedics, Psychiatry, Pulmonology, and Rehabilitation – and the Neurology/Neurosurgery department at Mount Sinai Beth Israel.

In arriving at its rankings for 12 specialties, U.S. News & World Report evaluated each institution's reputation, mortality index, patient safety record, discharges, and other care-related factors, including nursing and technology. The rankings for four specialties, Ophthalmology, Psychiatry, Rehabilitation, and Rheumatology were based on reputation alone, and reflect a three-year running average.
