Newswise — Loyola Medicine optometrist Eileen Gable, OD, FAOO, has been named president-elect of the Illinois chapter of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO). “Increasing education about eye care is a passion of mine and I look forward to continuing to expand the instructional programs of the Illinois chapter of the American Academy of Optometry," said Dr. Gable, who specializes in pediatric optometry at Loyola. “I am really proud of how that translates into the exceptional work done in the communities by my AAO colleagues."
The AAO is a national organization of optometrists. Its goal is to maintain and enhance excellence in optometric practice, by both promoting research and the dissemination of knowledge. The AAO holds an annual meeting, publishes a monthly scientific journal, credentials optometrists through the fellowship process and publishes position statements.As president-elect, Dr. Gable will serves as an official Illinois representative to the national organization and will assist the president in guiding the academy's executive committee and board of directors. She will serve as president in 2018. Dr. Gable is an associate professor of ophthalmology at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. She has been actively involved with AAO since 1996. She served on the executive committee of the Illinois Chapter of the AAO since 2012. She is also active as a member of the NEI Healthy Vision Community Awards Grant Review, Illinois Diabetes Prevention and Control Program and the American Diabetes Association. Dr. Gable earned her optometry degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia and her bachelor of science degree from Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa.
Dr. Gable is the recipient of a $1 million research grant from the Vision of Hope health alliance from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. She specializes in the correction of lazy eye in children, diabetic eye care and preventive eye health.
