With the fate of thousands of children massing along the U.S.-Mexico border in recent weeks still in doubt, the crisis is challenging immigration officials, aid workers and policymakers alike. Benjamin Roth, an assistant professor at the University of South Carolina’s College of Social Work, is available to discuss this growing trend and what the future may hold for these children.
Roth’s research focuses on the process of integration for immigrants who have entered the U.S. His current work examines the effects of President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) on the lived experiences of immigrant youth in South Carolina, and a survey of nonprofit social service agencies in Chicago suburbs with rapidly growing immigrant populations. Together with USC colleague Breanne Grace, he is also launching a study of family reunification programs for unaccompanied immigrant children.
