Anthony Lemieux, a researcher who monitors media produced by the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS, also known as Daesh, ISIL or simply Islamic State), is available to discuss current events and communications coming from the organization, as well as other extremist groups’ propaganda.

Lemieux is the director of the Global Studies Institute (GSI) and associate professor of communication at Georgia State University. His contact information is in the box above for logged-in Newswise registrants.

An investigator with the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START), he explores and monitors the publications and other media produced by ISIS — which has a well-planned public relations apparatus. Lemieux has authored more than 40 articles and reports on topics including the relationship between music and violence, social and political motivations for violence, terrorist propaganda, and health behavior change.

He is currently an investigator on a project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense to explore media content from ISIS and other terrorist groups, looking to build a body of knowledge that can help the U.S. and the international community to tackle and counter terrorist groups’ propaganda.

A Q&A with Lemieux taking a look at his research project is available online at http://www.gsu.edu/2015/09/09/how-isis-exploits-the-power-of-new-media/.

Lemieux is also the director of GSI at Georgia State, which aims to use interdisciplinary research, education and outreach to tackle pressing global issues including conflict and terrorism, human rights, challenges facing global cities, and beyond.
