Newswise — Teaneck, NJ - Fairleigh Dickinson University President J. Michael Adams will assume the presidency of the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP) during the group’s triennial conference in New York City, June 17-20, 2011.
The event will bring together university heads from around the world. Presidents from approximately 80 countries will be in attendance. The 2011 Triennial will feature presentations and panel discussions from many prominent speakers representing national governments, universities and major corporations presenting on higher education issues including a panel of reporters from The New York Times and a panel of Arab university presidents. The IAUP also will hold general and executive committee meetings that will drive the organization’s agenda during the three years of Adams’ presidency.
“The world has changed and it seeks trusted, respected leadership into the future,” Adams said. “IAUP is the global voice of higher education. The only path to a peaceful prosperous future is education.”
IAUP membership is reserved for current and former university heads, generally holding the titles of president, rector, or vice-chancellors. The location of the IAUP triennial conferences rotates around the world, coinciding with the election of each new president. Recent conferences have been held in Chile, Thailand, Australia and Denmark. The last triennial held in the United States was held in San Francisco, Calif., in 1996. The next triennial is scheduled for Yokohama, Japan in 2014.
Fairleigh Dickinson founder Peter Sammartino led the creation of IAUP and was the first president of the organization. He organized the first triennial, which was held at FDU’s Wroxton College in 1964.
“I am very proud to build upon the work of Peter Sammartino and contribute to the mission of this very important organization,” said Adams, who will serve as president through 2014. “I am honored to represent FDU and further the institution’s international influence.”
Early in Adams’ tenure as FDU president, he emphasized the importance of renewing ties with the organization. FDU started housing the IAUP archives, and Adams served in various capacities, including as chair of the North American Council and executive committee member. Three years ago, he was named president-elect.

Since its founding in 1964, IAUP has developed strong working relationships with the World Bank, the European Commission, UNESCO and the United Nations, partnering with the latter on The IAUP/UN Commission on Disarmament Education, Conflict Resolution and Peace. IAUP was responsible for the proposal to create the Year of Peace adopted by the United Nations.
Recently, IAUP was the facilitating organization in the launch of the United Nations Academic Impact (www.AcademicImpact.org). In 2010, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and President Adams gave opening remarks at the official launch to more than 600 participants from around the world. IAUP continues as an adviser to the Qatar Foundation in organizing the World Innovative Summit in Education (WISE). IAUP, with the Institute of International Education (IIE), developed and delivered the WISE Institute for Education Leadership to new presidents, vice chancellors, and rectors from developing countries. The pilot program included CEOs from Ghana, Egypt, Iraq, Bangladesh, Palestine, India, Pakistan, Colombia, and Sudan.
