Collins, Jr. – 413-545-4079 / pmcollins[at]legal.umass[dot]edu ----------------------------- Paul M. Collins, Jr., a leading expert on judicial politics, is available to comment on U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen’s decision to block President Obama’s executive action on immigration that would have prevented the deportation of as many as five million people living in the U.S. illegally. “Though this is a very technical ruling, it illustrates the broader problems the Obama administration faces when trying to take unilateral action on immigration,” Collins says. “Unfortunately for the president, the Republicans in congress do not appear willing to work with him on immigration reform so he may have to get used to defending his executive actions in the courts.” An associate professor of political science and director of the legal studies program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Collins is available to discuss:

- The basis of Hanen’s decision, and how Republican lawmakers will use this delay to formulate an expected lawsuit to permanently halt the President’s immigration orders

- How the appeals process will work for the Obama administration and the Justice Department, and the potential for the case to filter up to the Supreme Court

- How the timeline for the executive action’s implementation will likely be altered by this ruling, and the impact the results of this ruling may have on future executive orders by Obama and the next president

- The political significance of the decision coming from Hanen, a George W. Bush-appointed judge who presides over the Southern District of Texas, often thought of as ground-zero of the illegal immigration battle
