Newswise — Dallas, Texas – The Federation Credentials Verification Service (FCVS) recently surpassed a major milestone in the organization’s history – the processing of its 150,000th physician portfolio. A service of the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB), the FCVS provides physicians and physician assistants with a lifetime portfolio of primary-source verified credentials.

Credentials stored by FCVS include medical education, postgraduate training, examination history, history of medical board actions, board certification and identifying information. Stored in a secure, centralized repository, the credentials can be forwarded to any state medical board or health care entity at the applicant’s request.

Established in 1996, FCVS has gained widespread acceptance and usage in the United States and internationally. The service is accepted by nearly all state medical boards and as of August 2012 had been used by more than 150,000 physicians and physician assistants.

“Because FCVS maintains key medical credentials for a physician’s entire career, users of the service don't have to go through the laborious process of assembling and forwarding this information every time they need to be licensed or credentialed,” said Michael Dugan, MBA, Chief Information Officer for the FSMB. “This allows FCVS to make a significant contribution toward facilitating physician mobility from state to state.”

FCVS is an integral piece of the FSMB’s License Portability Project – a series of initiatives designed to streamline state licensure processes and ease physician mobility between states. FCVS encourages license portability by allowing physicians and physician assistants to establish a lifetime portfolio of primary-source verified credentials which can be forwarded, at the applicant's request, to state medical boards or health care entities.

Additionally, FCVS is integrated with another key component of the License Portability Project – the Uniform Application for Physician State Licensure (UA). The UA streamlines the licensure process by allowing physicians to fill out an online application once and then use the application whenever they apply for licensure in another state that accepts or requires the UA.
