Newswise — HOUSTON ― Economist and health care policy expert Mark B. McClellan, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform at Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., will keynote an address on prevention and health care reform at 8 a.m., Friday, Feb. 17 in The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Hickey Auditorium.

The lecture is part of a lecture series sponsored by the Duncan Family Institute for Cancer Prevention and Risk Assessment and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellowship to Leonard Zwelling, M.D., professor of Experimental Therapeutics at MD Anderson.

McClellan served under former President George W. Bush as commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

McClellan’s talk will touch on health care reform and how it may affect preventive services and care to the public. His research interests are focused on health care technology costs, quality health care measurement and influential economic and policy factors that help predict treatment decisions and health outcomes.

His current work at Brookings incorporates accountability in care including a focus on rising health care costs and ongoing global economic pressures that address health care efficiency and quality. The center’s goal is to offer solutions that will provide high-quality affordable health care at national, state and local levels.

A native of Texas, McClellan graduated from The University of Texas at Austin and went on to earn his medical degree from Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences in Technology and his doctoral degree in economics from MIT. He is a two-time winner of the Arrow Award for Outstanding Research in Health Economics, an annual award presented by the International Health Economics Association for the best paper in health economics.
