Newswise — The Honorable Dorit Beinisch, former president and justice of the Supreme Court of Israel, joins the Honorable Diana Gribbon Motz, judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and Phoebe A. Haddon, dean and professor at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, on Monday, Nov. 5, for a discussion on topics expected to include human rights and the rule of law in democratic societies.

Justice Beinisch retired from the Israeli Supreme Court in February, after a 45-year legal career in public service. She joined the Israel Ministry of Justice in 1967, became the first woman to serve as State Attorney in 1989, was appointed to the Supreme Court of Israel in 1996 and became its president in 2006, a position she held until her retirement. She is well known for her decisions to protect human rights in cases involving juveniles, crime victims, adoption and the status of women.

Judge Motz served on the Maryland Court of Special Appeals before her appointment in 1994 to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, the first Maryland woman to receive an appointment to that court.

The event at the School runs from noon to 1 p.m. It is free and open to the public, but an RSVP is required. The School is located at 500 W. Baltimore St., Baltimore, MD.
