#Frankenstorm to Cause Atypical Surges, Flooding: #VTresearch
Source Newsroom: Virginia Tech (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University)
Hurricane Sandy’s size and slow approach will create untraditional flooding and surge patterns. “The wind field is so large it is creating different types of surge,” says Jennifer L. Irish, an authority on the physical impacts of coastal hazards including storm surge, tsunami inundation, and erosion. She is an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering. jirish@vt.edu
Also, Robert Weiss, an associate professor of geosciences, has a unique perspective on this coastal threat. He studies the response of the physical environment to tsunami generated by earthquakes, slides and oceanic meteorite impacts and the records that such processes produce. weiszr@vt.edu
