Newswise — SAVANNAH (10-Dec-10) - Georgia Tech Savannah Civil and Environmental Engineering Associate Professor Hermann Fritz is featured as one of the research team members in a recent Jakarta Globe article about the Mentawai Islands earthquake and tsunami that took place in October off the coast of Sumatra.
The international team of researchers were awarded a Rapid Response Research Grant (RAPID) from the NSF in order to quickly conduct a reconnaissance survey. Shortly after visiting the research site, Dr. Fritz participated in a press conference that took place at the Indonesian President's Office.
Dr. Fritz' previous research activites include Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans and the Gulf Coast on Aug. 29, 2005, and the Dec. 26, 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. In the wake of the tsunami, Fritz led International Tsuanmi Survey Teams (ITST) in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Somalia, Madagascar, Oman, and the Maldives.
