Newswise — Researchers at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ), who need to utilize unique imaging technology, soon will have such equipment right at their fingertips, thanks to a generous gift from the J. Seward Johnson, Sr. 1963 Charitable Trust. The Charitable Trust recently contributed $100,000 to the Cancer Institute of New Jersey Foundation toward the purchase of the IVIS® 100 Optical Imaging System, which provides enhanced visualization of cancer cells. CINJ is a Center of Excellence of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

The IVIS® 100 is an imaging instrument, which provides a large field view to monitor disease progression, gene expression and cell activity. Along with tumor growth, scientists also will have the ability to track metastasis and evaluate tumor development before, during and after treatment. Such abilities also will enable researchers to better assess tumor response to medication. The equipment will soon be housed at CINJ's Little Albany Street location and will be accessible by other investigators within UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and CINJ's Flagship Hospital, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

John Glod, MD, PhD, a pediatric oncologist at CINJ and assistant professor of pediatrics and pharmacology at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and Debabrata Banerjee, PhD, a scientist at CINJ and associate professor of medicine at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, are investigating how non-cancerous bone marrow cells supply brain tumor cells with nutrients for growth. Dr. Glod notes by having IVIS® 100, they'll be able to better tackle the mysteries of brain cancer, which is the most common solid tumor in children. "This technology will give us a more intricate view of cell interaction. The precise tracking of such movement will allow us to significantly increase the speed in which we can develop and administer targeted treatments to brain cancer patients," said Glod.

Paula Hunchar, executive director of the CINJ Foundation, notes, "The continued generosity of the J. Seward Johnson, Sr. 1963 Charitable Trust not only provides our scientists with advanced technology to support their cutting edge research, but this technology also helps to forge widespread collaborations with other top scientists from other scientific centers of excellence. We are grateful for their support."

The CINJ Foundation raises funds to support cancer research, treatment, prevention and education programs of CINJ. Gifts are received from corporations, foundations, individuals, special events and through planned gifts.
