ATLANTA -- A Georgia State University business expert is available to discuss Google’s announcement that it will expand its Google Fiber service – offering up super fast Internet speeds – to Atlanta, Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham and Nashville.

Christopher Lemley, instructor of business at Georgia State’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business, said the decision by the Internet behemoth will force competitors such as Comcast to make upgrades to their services, change prices and most of all – improve customer service.

“Competition is almost always good for the purchaser,” he explained. “Right now, the city of Atlanta market is controlled by two providers (Comcast and AT&T). With a competitor such as Google entering the market with super high-speed connections, it should drive change.”

For these selected cities, Lemley said the service will also serve as an economic boost as companies may be attracted by the large amount of bandwidth offered by the service.

“it will probably bring in more employees who are not in the market right now - population growth that will be good for the tax base,” explained. “In these days of ‘big data’ on the business side it may help attract more companies to Atlanta who need the bandwidth they will be offering.”

Lemley, a 28-year veteran in the marketing field, has had senior management positions for two of the largest international advertising agency networks, and has also worked with major national and international clients including Federated Stores, Sara Lee Corporation, Twentieth Century-Fox Films, The Hoover Company and Wrangler Jeans.
