Newswise — WASHINGTON—The George Washington University School of Nursing (SON) received a three-year, $1 million grant to develop a program that increases the opportunity for interprofessional education experiences for nurse practitioners.

“Working with different health care disciplines that may have different perspectives on health can be challenging for new graduates,” said Christine Pintz, associate dean for graduate studies at SON and project director for the grant. “This grant provides support for the development of innovative educational approaches to help health professional students gain the knowledge, skills and attitudes to practice within an interprofessional environment. In addition, students participating in this program will learn to work with patients who have multiple chronic conditions in a way that is more patient-centered and is focused on engaging patients in their own care.”

The grant will assist SON with two goals: developing and disseminating open access educational resources and implementing clinical experiences for students to work with other health care students caring for patients with multiple chronic conditions. The coursework is offered through distance learning, which allows students to apply new knowledge to their specific community. The project manager is Laurie Posey, assistant professor of nursing and director of instructional design at SON.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nurse practitioner employment opportunities are expected to grow by 31 percent from 2012 to 2022. This is due in part to the estimated 32 million newly insured patients as a result of the Affordable Care Act. With health care becoming increasingly complex, medical organizations have suggested that health professional students learn to work as part of an interprofessional health care team.

The grant, titled Collaborative Coaching for Self-Management of Multiple Chronic Conditions, was awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration.
