Newswise — WASHINGTON— The GW Cancer Institute is hosting its second Survivorship Research Symposium titled, “Research to Practice: Creating Novel Interventions to Eliminate Health Inequalities,” with a focus on the needs of adult survivors of pediatric cancer and young adult cancer survivors. The event will feature leading-edge survivorship researchers and clinicians and cancer survivors who will share their personal experiences and unique challenges. The afternoon will also include community-based, participatory working groups for survivors, caregivers, clinicians and researchers to create innovative research approaches to reduce health disparities among these target populations.

Experts, including: Brad Zebrack, Ph.D., from University of Michigan Comprehensive CancerCenter, who conducts research on the effects of cancer on the psychosocial growth and development of adolescents and young adults; Sharon Castellino, M.D., from Wake Forrest University, who serves as the director of the childhood cancer survivor long term follow-up program at the institution, focusing her research on health disparities, neurocognitive dysfunction and cardiovascular injury in childhood cancer survivors; and others from the American Cancer Society, LIVESTRONG, and the Alpert Medical School of Brown University and Miriam Hospital will present at the symposium. The GW Cancer Institute’s Thriving After Cancer Program—a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary care clinic for cancer survivors—will be co-presented by Katarina Steacy, MS, RN, FNP-C, CPON, who coordinates the program and one of the program’s first patients.

Who: Cancer survivors and caregivers are invited to attend this symposium for free (registration is required); survivorship researchers, clinicians and other health professionals are all invited and encouraged to attend.
